Things to Do in Coromandel

Things to Do in Coromandel

If youโ€™re looking for a blend of stunning landscapes, chill vibes, and outdoor adventures, Coromandelโ€™s the place to be. Hereโ€™s a breakdown of some top things to do there.

ย

When I first moved to New Zealand for work, everyone kept telling me about the Coromandel Peninsula. "Youโ€™ve got to visit," theyโ€™d say, "itโ€™s like a slice of paradise." Iโ€™ll admit, I didnโ€™t rush at first. But then, one long weekend, a mate convinced me to pack up the car and head out. And let me tell you, they werenโ€™t wrong.ย

Hot Water Beach

Letโ€™s start with one of the most unique experiences in the Coromandel โ€“ Hot Water Beach. Picture this: a spade, some friends, and your very own hot tub carved right into the sand. The trick is to hit the beach a couple of hours either side of low tide, so you can dig into the naturally heated water bubbling below the surface. Trust me, thereโ€™s something so satisfying about creating your own little spa while the oceanโ€™s just metres away. Pro tip: bring a bucket to cool things down because some spots can get seriously hot!

Cathedral Cove

You canโ€™t talk about Coromandel without mentioning Cathedral Cove. Itโ€™s one of those places that doesnโ€™t just live up to the hype โ€“ it surpasses it. The hike to get there is part of the charm. Itโ€™s a moderate walk, about 45 minutes each way, but the views make it all worthwhile. Along the way, youโ€™ll see cliffs, turquoise waters, and even smaller coves you might want to explore. When you finally arrive, the massive rock archway and pristine beach feel almost otherworldly. Bring a picnic, take a swim, and soak it all in.

The Pinnacles

For the hikers out there, the Pinnacles Track is a must. This oneโ€™s a bit of a commitment, but the reward at the top is unbeatable. I did it as an overnight trip, staying in the hut near the summit. Watching the sunrise from the top was honestly one of the most awe-inspiring moments Iโ€™ve had since moving here. If youโ€™re short on time, you can do it in a day, but be prepared for a solid workout.

Coromandel Town and Driving Creek Railway

If youโ€™re after something a bit more relaxed, Coromandel Town has you covered. Itโ€™s got this laid-back, artsy vibe thatโ€™s hard not to love. Pop into the local galleries, grab a coffee, and take it slow. One of the standout attractions here is the Driving Creek Railway. Itโ€™s this quirky little train that takes you up through native bush to a lookout with epic views. The story behind it is just as fascinating as the ride itself.

Whangapoua and New Chums Beach

This oneโ€™s for the beach lovers. New Chums Beach is often ranked among the worldโ€™s best beaches, and itโ€™s not hard to see why. Thereโ€™s no road access, so youโ€™ll need to walk about half an hour from Whangapoua. But thatโ€™s part of what makes it special โ€“ no crowds, just golden sand and crystal-clear water. Itโ€™s a perfect spot for some quiet time or a picnic with mates.

Whether youโ€™re into hiking, beaches, or just soaking up natural beauty, Coromandel has something for everyone. My advice? Take your time and learn about top things to do in the coromandel. Thereโ€™s no rush here, and thatโ€™s the beauty of it. Pack some comfy shoes, a camera, and a sense of adventure. You wonโ€™t regret it.
