Things to Do in Coromandel

If you’re looking for a blend of stunning landscapes, chill vibes, and outdoor adventures, Coromandel’s the place to be. Here’s a breakdown of some top things to do there.

When I first moved to New Zealand for work, everyone kept telling me about the Coromandel Peninsula. "You’ve got to visit," they’d say, "it’s like a slice of paradise." I’ll admit, I didn’t rush at first. But then, one long weekend, a mate convinced me to pack up the car and head out. And let me tell you, they weren’t wrong.

Hot Water Beach

Let’s start with one of the most unique experiences in the Coromandel – Hot Water Beach. Picture this: a spade, some friends, and your very own hot tub carved right into the sand. The trick is to hit the beach a couple of hours either side of low tide, so you can dig into the naturally heated water bubbling below the surface. Trust me, there’s something so satisfying about creating your own little spa while the ocean’s just metres away. Pro tip: bring a bucket to cool things down because some spots can get seriously hot!

Cathedral Cove

You can’t talk about Coromandel without mentioning Cathedral Cove. It’s one of those places that doesn’t just live up to the hype – it surpasses it. The hike to get there is part of the charm. It’s a moderate walk, about 45 minutes each way, but the views make it all worthwhile. Along the way, you’ll see cliffs, turquoise waters, and even smaller coves you might want to explore. When you finally arrive, the massive rock archway and pristine beach feel almost otherworldly. Bring a picnic, take a swim, and soak it all in.

The Pinnacles

For the hikers out there, the Pinnacles Track is a must. This one’s a bit of a commitment, but the reward at the top is unbeatable. I did it as an overnight trip, staying in the hut near the summit. Watching the sunrise from the top was honestly one of the most awe-inspiring moments I’ve had since moving here. If you’re short on time, you can do it in a day, but be prepared for a solid workout.

Coromandel Town and Driving Creek Railway

If you’re after something a bit more relaxed, Coromandel Town has you covered. It’s got this laid-back, artsy vibe that’s hard not to love. Pop into the local galleries, grab a coffee, and take it slow. One of the standout attractions here is the Driving Creek Railway. It’s this quirky little train that takes you up through native bush to a lookout with epic views. The story behind it is just as fascinating as the ride itself.

Whangapoua and New Chums Beach

This one’s for the beach lovers. New Chums Beach is often ranked among the world’s best beaches, and it’s not hard to see why. There’s no road access, so you’ll need to walk about half an hour from Whangapoua. But that’s part of what makes it special – no crowds, just golden sand and crystal-clear water. It’s a perfect spot for some quiet time or a picnic with mates.

Whether you’re into hiking, beaches, or just soaking up natural beauty, Coromandel has something for everyone. My advice? Take your time and learn about top things to do in the coromandel. There’s no rush here, and that’s the beauty of it. Pack some comfy shoes, a camera, and a sense of adventure. You won’t regret it.
