Best Things to Do in Coromandel

If you're new to the area or just passing through, here’s a guide to some of the best things to do in Coromandel – all tried and tested by yours truly.

The Coromandel Peninsula – it's where I discovered my love for the outdoors in New Zealand. My first time there was a weekend getaway planned on a whim. Little did I know it would turn into a bit of an obsession. If you're new to the area or just passing through, here’s a guide to some of the best things to do in coromandel – all tried and tested by yours truly.

Catch the Sunrise at New Chums Beach
Let's start with something magical. When my friend convinced me to get up at 5 a.m. for a beach sunrise, I thought he was joking. But New Chums Beach is special – it’s often ranked as one of the best beaches in the world, and once you're there, you'll understand why. The beach isn’t crowded, especially in the morning, and the combination of the pink and orange sunrise hues with the crashing waves is something you just have to see to believe. The 30-minute hike to get there makes it feel like a hidden paradise – totally worth the early alarm. Tip: Take a pair of comfy walking shoes; the track is a mix of forest, rocks, and sometimes muddy patches.

Dig Your Own Hot Pool at Hot Water Beach
If you haven't heard of this, trust me – it’s as cool as it sounds. Hot Water Beach is unique because at low tide, you can dig into the sand to find hot water bubbling up from underground. My mates and I tried it out once on a winter’s day, and it felt like having our own private spa with the sea view. Just bring a shovel (or rent one there), and remember that timing is everything – check tide times online before you go, as it only works within a couple of hours around low tide. Pro Tip: Go early or later in the evening to avoid the crowds; it’s more relaxing with fewer people around.

Hike to the Pinnacles
Alright, this one’s a bit of a commitment, but if you're up for an adventure, the Pinnacles walk is unforgettable. My first attempt at it was last summer. It’s a solid 7-8 hour return trip if you do it in one go, but many people stay at the Pinnacles Hut for the night and catch the sunrise. Walking through the Kauri forest, crossing suspension bridges, and climbing wooden ladders makes you feel like an explorer in a lost world. Reaching the top is rewarding – the views stretch out for miles over the Coromandel ranges. Advice: Pack plenty of water, snacks, and layers – the weather can change quickly up there.

Kayak Through Whenuakura Island (Donut Island)
One of my most memorable adventures was kayaking to Whenuakura Island, also known as Donut Island. It's a short paddle from Whangamata Beach and takes you to a secluded spot with a turquoise lagoon hidden inside the island. If you're up for a bit of an arm workout and want to experience something unique, this is a must-do. Note: Kayak rentals are available on the beach, and remember to check the water conditions beforehand, especially if you're not a confident kayaker.

Explore Cathedral Cove
No Coromandel trip is complete without visiting Cathedral Cove. The stunning archway and the white sand beach have become iconic. I've been there in all seasons, and each time feels like a fresh experience. It’s about a 30-40 minute walk from the car park to reach the cove, but once you're there, it’s an ideal spot for photos, swimming, or just relaxing with a picnic. Pro Tip: Go early in the morning to beat the crowds – it's a popular spot, especially during the summer.

Take a Scenic Drive Along the Coast
Driving along the winding coastal roads is an adventure in itself. The road from Thames to Coromandel Town is lined with beaches, forests, and incredible lookout points. I remember stopping at every other lookout point on my first drive – couldn't get enough of it. Pack some snacks, load up a good playlist, and take your time with it. There’s something peaceful about just cruising and taking in the views. Advice: Fill up on petrol before you go – stations can be few and far between along some stretches.

There’s something for everyone in the Coromandel, whether you’re an adventurer, a beach lover, or someone just looking to unwind. Just remember to go with a flexible schedule – this place has a way of making you want to stay a little longer than planned. So, pack your essentials, leave room for spontaneity, and let the Coromandel show you its best.
